SOCI 309: Social Theorizing Project
In 2025, a group of colleagues and I collaborated with the University of Victoria Scarborough Charter Committee to further initiatives in limiting anti-black racism across the university. Our project took a research-focused approach, highlighting how different universities, such as the University of Alberta and the University of Toronto, were implementing the Scarborough Charter and how those initiatives could be implemented at UVic. Below is the final slideshow.

In 2024, I independently designed and conducted a qualitative research project examining the online discourse surrounding the 2021 defamation trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp. Focusing on platforms such as Quora and Reddit, the study explored how gendered stereotypes shaped public perceptions of victimhood and credibility. Using a Foucauldian theoretical framework, I analyzed the ways in which power, language, and discourse intersected to create narratives around each party, ultimately revealing deeper sociological assumptions about gender and legitimacy. In 2025, I led a quantitative research project investigating how visible minorities in Canada perceive their confidence in the police. Using data from the 2020 General Social Survey (GSS), which aims to capture Canadians’ sense of identity, attachment, belonging, and pride in their social and cultural environment, I examined race, systemic oppression, and institutional trust. Although the assignment is still in progress, I have chosen to highlight it due to its relevance to a potential career in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Through this statistical analysis, I aimed to contribute to broader conversations about systemic oppression and institutional trust in Canadian society.

The following assignments were written between January and March 2025. It was based on weekly readings exploring different theoretical concepts assigned in class that we were required to break down into four parts: the main argument and/or thesis, a discussion component, a commentary portion, and finally, a current event connection.
For these examples of my work, I have specifically chosen topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. These topics critically engage with racism, sexual harassment in schools and workplaces, and policy critique within DEI frameworks and initiatives.
